HISTORY OF LEPAA

Lepaa area was the most densely populated area in Tavastia already in the Iron Age due to favorable circumstances and the important water route.

Numerous burial sites, dwellings, ancient fields, sword sharpening stones and castle hills tell about prehistoric settlement.

In the early Middle ages, the Swedish reign and Christianity began to gain their strong foothold in Tavastia, which could be seen as churches, fortresses and so called ”rälssi manors” (rälssi manors were tax exempt).

In the Medieval times, there used to be a sacrificial well church in Lepaa to worship deities.

LEPAA MANOR

Lepaa Manor is one of the oldest manors in Tavastia, and it is already mentioned as a manor home in the 1460´s. The main building is said to date from the 17th century.

The golden age of the manor was the time of the ”Lepaa” family, in the 16th century. These masters of the manor were the richest noble family in Tavastia and some of the most politically influencial men in the country.

The manor building got its present day empire-style exterior at the beginning of the 19th century.  The manor garden was originally planted in the 1760’ s. The English landscape park dates from the 1840’ s and the baroque-style garden from the 1930’ s.

The last owner, Karl Fredrik Packalén, left the manor in his will to the state for a gardener or agriculture school. Horticultural training at Lepaa gardening school began in 1912.
